**Elmer stated, "I was in charge of the Medical Aid men for the 3rd battalion in Africa for six months. I was acting as 1st Sergeant. I had a dispute with my Captain. He took my rank away and sent me to Company B as an Aid man. The man that replaced me was killed by our own plane behind the fighting lines in Italy. The Captain went crazy three weeks later and was sent back to the States."
Elmer was discharged July 17, 1945. He went back to high school at Hyden in Leslie County, Kentucky. Later he taught school at Bear Branch, Kentucky and taught his sister, Jewel. He also taught at Piney Grove in Leslie County, Kentucky. He then worked for a while in the mines and also worked at General Motors in Hamilton, Ohio.
