4. **John C. Huff, (Jr.), (1922 - 1944), 80 Infantry Division, WW ll

**John C. Huff, (1839 - 1919) was a Civil War Veteran, farmer, and father of nine children. His wife was Pauline Reynolds Huff, originally from Cow Creek in Owsley County. John was known throughout the area as a physician. Though he had no real medical training, he taught himself the fundamentals of caring for people the best he could. He was present for many births throughout the area surrounding Confluence, KY in the Wilder Branch, Trace Branch area.

**John C. Huff, (Jr.), (1922 - 1944), This is the son of Sherman and Lucy J Campbell Huff. While he is given the "Jr." this is really to distinguish him from his grandfather John C Huff for whom he was named and fought in the Civil Wat and who is buried nearby.

John was killed in action near Bastogne, Belgium. The Battle was part of the larger Battle of the Bulge. Outnumbered and surrounded for five days, a U.S. Army combined arms force of airborne infantry, armor, engineers, tank destroyers, and artillery conducted a successful defense of the Belgian crossroads town of Bastogne in late December 1944. Many men died, including John C. Huff, Jr.

January 17, 1945, John received a posthumous Bronze Star from President Roosevelt for bravery in a prior battle in France on December 8, 1944. He volunteered for a dangerous mission to locate a German position on the front line. He saved himself and the platoon leader from capture.
